TMA’s Hard Hats for Little Heads bike helmet giveaway program celebrates 20 years of keeping kids safe this May. The milestone was marked in Texas style during TexMed/AllMed with these events:
• Recognized program founder Larry C. Driver, MD, of Houston, whose resolution to TMA’s House of Delegates (HOD) started the program in 1994. Read more about Dr. Driver’s award-winning idea and its results in the December 2011 issue of Texas Medicine.
• Raised nearly $6,500 for the Hard Hats program with a “pass the helmet” during the HOD meeting. The funds will cover the cost of nearly 900 helmets. If you’d like to make a tax-deductible contribution to Hard Hats, visit the TMA Foundation secure website.
• Received commitments from 20 physicians, TMA Alliance members, and medical students to host events this year. These individuals were entered into a drawing to win 50 free helmets for their event, and Harris County Medical Society (CMS) Alliance was the winner. Congratulations!
• Announced our October statewide helmet giveaway blitz. Our goal is to have more than 50 events statewide in October and give away 5,000-plus helmets. If you haven’t signed up yet to host an event in October, do so today. Help us reach our 34,000 helmet goal.
