Statement by Carlos J. Cardenas, MD, president of the Texas Medical Association (TMA), in reaction to the passage and signing into law of the Texas Medical Board (TMB) Sunset bills — Senate Bill 20 (which extends the life of TMB) and Senate Bill 60 (which funds the agency).
“The Texas Medical Association thanks Gov. Greg Abbott for placing the Medical Practice Act and TMB Sunset renewal on the legislative special session call. We also thank Texas lawmakers for answering that call and passing these laws overwhelmingly, to ensure Texans can continue to receive the best patient care possible from their physicians.
“Thank you for standing up for medicine and patient care.
“We also thank the governor for signing both bills into law, to ensure patients’ medical care from physicians is uninterrupted.”
TMA is the largest state medical society in the nation, representing more than 50,000 physician and medical student members. It is located in Austin and has 110 component county medical societies around the state. TMA’s key objective since 1853 is to improve the health of all Texans.
