Resurgence of Measles in Texas: Clinical Considerations
Reported Outbreak: Texas is experiencing its largest measles outbreak in 30 years, with 124 confirmed cases since late January. The South Plains region, particularly Gaines County, is the most affected.
Contributing Factors: Declining vaccination rates, high virus transmissibility, and a prolonged incubation period.
Symptoms: The classic “3 C’s” (cough, coryza, conjunctivitis), high fever, and a characteristic rash. Patients are contagious from 4 days before to 4 days after rash appearance.
Clinical Protocol: Isolate suspected cases, ensure mask use, and contact local health authorities at (254) 750-5450 for further guidance.
